Artevino Family Wineries
Artevino Family Wineries is present in four of the most prestigious denominations of origin in Spain: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Toro and Rueda. Founded in 1987 by Gonzalo Antón, recognized hotelier and owner of the Zaldiaran Restaurant, the group was born with Bodegas Izadi, uniting his two passions: wine and gastronomy.
In 1992, Izadi opened its doors to the public, becoming one of the first wineries with a restaurant, hotel and guided tours, as well as hosting pioneering events of the Vitoria Author Cuisine Congress. The arrival of Lalo Antón to the company in the year 2000 prompted a period of internationalization and expansion, which materialized with the incorporation of Finca Villacreces (2003), Vetus (2004) and the creation of Orben in 2005.
International recognition soon arrived: in 2010, Izadi was named one of the 100 best wineries in the world by Wine & Spirits, and in 2012, Pruno from Finca Villacreces was highlighted as the best Spanish wine for less than $20 according to Robert Parker. In 2017, Artevino expands its vineyard with the acquisition of Pinos Claros in Ribera del Duero, reaching 275 hectares, with 70% organically farmed. Two years later, Orben is distinguished by Wine Spectator as the best Spanish wine of the year and ranks among the 15 best in the world.
Today, Artevino reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and respect for the origin, certifying all its wineries under the Wineries for Climate Protection program.
Our wineries:
Bodegas Izadi is located in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, in Villabuena de Álava, where the largest concentration of old vineyards in the DOCa Rioja is located. Izadi was founded in 1987 by Gonzalo Antón, a well-known figure in Spanish gastronomy. Izadi has 187 hectares of small old vineyards in the strategic triangle formed by the villages of Villabuena, Samaniego and Ábalos. The concern for making contemporary wines from native varieties and respect for nature are two of the fundamental purposes of Izadi, which also has among its wines one of the first singular vineyards in Rioja.
Finca Villacreces, the jewel of the golden mile of Ribera, is an estate of 110 hectares, 64 of them of its own vineyard, which is divided into 15 plots of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties. This vineyard, located on a meander of the Duero River in the heart of Ribera del Duero’s golden mile, is surrounded by a two-hundred-year-old pine forest of great environmental and scenic value. The peculiar configuration of the estate’s soils (sand, clay and gravel) gives Villacreces wines a personality of their own while at the same time exhibiting the typicality of the appellation’s most sought-after fine red wine. 100% of the estate is farmed organically to preserve the value and diversity of a unique environmental enclave.
Orben reinterprets the high altitude Rioja through old vineyards planted between 1945 and 1954 in the area around Laguardia. Climatic and geographical factors shape these wines that arise from vines planted in goblet on very poor soils with low yields. Orben exhibits the uniqueness of this very special vineyard at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria.
Vetus represents the encounter of two historic wine territories, Toro and Rueda, authentic and genuine territories, committed to the origin and nature, and driven by non-conformist people who seek to escape from stereotypes. Bodegas Vetus was born to respond to this nonconformism and to value places as special as Toro or Rueda in Segovia, where time has stopped to maintain traditions, the attachment to the land, creating a barrier against globalization and managing to maintain something unique. From Toro, where it has an estate of 20 hectares, the winery produces fresh, friendly wines, which show a new version of viticulture and native varieties.
