Château Bonalgue is above all, a family story, The Bourotte Audy Family. The Château was created in 1801, by a Napoleon’s Captain (You can still see the military symbols on the front). One century later, the Bourotte-Audy Family buy this magnificent winery, close to Libourne end they will make it live again, indeed, it has been occupied until the 80s.
The Bourotte family acquired the property in 1926. The Pomerol appellation was then in full renewal and the vineyard underwent a profound restructuring, a source of stability for the following decades. Since then, the men who succeeded each other at the head of Bonalgue have had the pleasure of working this terroir in complete freedom and independence.
Château Bonalgue have 9.5 ha located on a clay and gravel soil wich helps Merlot to express itself in its best way. The gravel allows optimal drainage and the clays is a natural water regulator. This gives round, elegant wines where the fruit dominates.
In Pomerol undoubtedly the Merlot expresses with incomparable ease and brilliance the velvet of its tannins and the richness of its aromas. Bonalgue is no exception to the rule: the vineyard is planted in Merlot at 90%, in Cabernet Franc at 10%.
We have banned chemicals and pesticides from our vineyards for several years and follow the specifications of Organic Agriculture. We are also beginning the biodynamic process that allows us to have a complete and balanced ecosystem.
