Saint-Émilion, France

Even if, in contrast to the classification of the Haut-Médoc, the one of Saint-Émilion is revised
at least every 10 years, Château Angélus had to wait a long time for the highest consecration.

And this despite the fact that the small château has been able to come up with impressive qualities for decades and enjoys the highest reputation, even cult status, among experts. The first wines often enough scratch the magical 100-point mark. From this point of view, Château Angélus is one of the few Bordeaux châteaux that have had a real “career” over the last 20 to 25 years. In 1985, it failed the new classification, for whatever reason, but in 1996 it made the longed-for – and above all long-deserved – leap into the highest category, that of the “Grand Cru Classés”, and then in 2012 the absolute crowning achievement, when Château Angélus was able to draw level with the two legends and icons Château Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone with the addition of the “Category A”. This makes every wine from this unique château a sought-after object, even the so-called “third wine”. After the château was advised for a long time by the Bordelais star oenologist Michel Rolland, the current directors Stephanie de Boüard-Rivoal and her cousin Thierry Grenié de Boüard are very good at the precise balancing act of capturing ripe fruit in the bottle without over-extracting the grapes, which could be extremely detrimental to the elegance and finesse. This applies to the Premier Cru as well as to all other wines with the Angélus signum. And that is exactly what you can feel and taste.
