Located on one of the highest and most beautiful gravelly rises in the Margaux appellation, Château du Tertre has a very interesting history.
It was created in the 18th century by an important merchant of Irish descent, Pierre Mitchell, who had fallen in love with the Bordeaux region and its wines. The founder of the first glass works in Bordeaux, this refined, innovative man realised one of his fondest dreams by establishing a wine estate of indisputable charm and elegance.
Other famous families followed in his footsteps: the de Brezets and de Vallandés, as well as the Koenigswarters, rich bankers close to Emperor Napoleon III. The quality of the wine was such that it was included among the Grand Cru Classé of Margaux in the 1855 classification.
Éric Albada Jelgersma acquired the estate in 1997. With major investments and a skilful combination of tradition and innovation, Jelgersma strove to rebuild the full character and nobility of Château du Tertre.
In 2021, the Château was sold to CNP Assurances, who entrusted its operation to the Helfrich family, owners of Grands Chais de France.
Located on one of the highest gravel knolls in the Médoc region, the single vineyard covers 52 hectares, remaining unchanged since the classification of 1855. The following grape varieties thrive on the wonderful sandy-loamy gravel: Cabernet Sauvignon (43%), Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (19%) and Petit Verdot (5%), with vines around 40-years old on average.
The vines are cultivated in line with strict ecological policies: 11 hectares using biodynamic principles and 41 hectares using a level of care in harmony with nature. After manual picking and sorting, vinification takes place in concrete, wooden and stainless-steel tanks, without the use of pumps. The wine is allowed to mature for 18 months in oak barrels, half of which are replaced every year.
