The founding father, Alphonse Gros, was born in the Hautes-Côtes village of Chaux in 1804, and established his domaine in Vosne-Romanée in 1830. His son, a progressive thinker in many areas, was already offering domaine-bottled wines in the middle of the 19th century, at a time when the vast majority of wines were bottled by trading companies. The following two generations extended the family estate, but it was subsequently divided up among the four children of Louis Gros.
Gustave and Colette joined their shares of the estate together under the name Domaine Gros Frère & Soeur. François and his brother Jean also worked together for a while, but the former’s daughter later went on to found Domaine Anne Gros. In 1995, Jean Gros passed on his share to his daughter Anne-Françoise and eldest son Michael Gros, who founded Domaine A-F Gros and Domaine Michel Gros respectively. Jean’s middle son, Bernard, took over the reins at his aunt and uncle’s estate, Domaine Gros Frère & Soeur, and continues to manage it together with his son Vincent. The sites shared by members of the family include names like Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Grands Echézeaux and Echézeaux.
