The Domaine des Sénéchaux counts itself amongst the oldest vineyards in Castro Novo, the birthplace of the wines of Pape and the creation of ‘’appella¬tions d’origine contrôlées’’.
The Domaine des Sénéchaux lies in the heart of the mythi¬cal Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and dates back to the XIV century. It owes its name to the domaine’s key vineyards in the Bois Sénéchaux area.
The Cazes family, owners of Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, purchased the Domaine des Sénéchaux in 2006.
With this new injection of energy, the future looks very bright. Jean-Charles Cazes, head manager of the family vineyards, has a real commitment to the Domaine and relies on the continuity provided by winemaker Bernard Tranchecoste, who has been with the company since 1998… and the old grenache vines that have been there significantly longer.
The estate produces an intense and generous red wine and an elegant and floral white wine, that reflect the unique character of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.
Castro Novo, wines from Pape and AOC
It is highly likely that, in the Roman era, the vineyards already formed part of the Castro Novo territory, the for¬mer name for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. When the papacy re¬located to Avignon in the XIV century, the prestigious title ‘’Vins du Pape’’ was exported to Europe and the United States.
The traditional blend of grape varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, composed mainly of Grenache, was established in the XVIII century by reputed winemakers including Joseph Ducos.
In order to accentuate the unique character of their wines, the region’s winemakers founded the first wine union in 1984. This formed the basis for AOC (Appellations d’Ori¬gine Contrôlée) and the strict regulations that are in place today.
