Château Batailley

Bordeaux
Pauillac, France

A revered institution in Pauillac, the name of the Château derives from the word “bataille”, meaning battle, and hails back to a skirmish that took place during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France. During this battle, the French troops regained possession of the nearby Château Latour, which had previously been occupied by the English. This historical fact also highlights one of Château Batailley’s greatest advantages – its vineyards are situated on the same gravel terroir as its celebrated neighbour. Having already produced great wines for many years beforehand, the estate was rewarded with inclusion in the legendary 1855 Haut Médoc classification. Eschewing any modernist challenges to traditional values, Château Batailley continues to fly the flag for classical and timeless Bordeaux wines. Stemming from 40 to 50-year-old vines, only half of the wine is matured in new barriques, allowing unhindered development of the authentic Cabernet and Merlot fruit. Château Batailley has always enjoyed an excellent reputation for the cellar and ageing potential of its wines.
