Jean-Baptiste Braneyre, the first person to own the estate in 1680, was well aware of the superb winegrowing potential of the gravelly soil located a stone’s throw from the Gironde estuary. The 1855 classification as the fourth Grand Cru Classé was later to confirm the quality of the terroir. In 1988, Patrick Maroteaux and his family decided to write a new chapter in the history of this estate. Patrick’s son, François-Xavier Maroteaux, has now taken over the management of the winery, working in his father’s footsteps to revitalise Saint-Julien’s special terroir.
The desired signature for the Branaire-Ducru wines was quickly established – based on the three key elements of finesse, fruit, and freshness. Aware of its impact on the environment, the estate is committed to the Bordeaux Wine Environmental Management System, based on the international ISO 14001 standard. The estate has been certified since 2020, and has also been classified as “High Environmental Value” (HVE) level 3 since 2017. Moreover, since 2021, the Château has also been certified as Bee Friendly, a European label for winegrowers who take an environmentally-friendly approach in order to protect bees and other pollinators.
One of Bordeaux’s great wines, Château Branaire-Ducru is praised by critics for the consistent quality of the vintages. Branaire-Ducru speaks a universal language for wine lovers across the world, stirring exuberant emotions and delighting the palate.
