Founded as a cooperative in 1907, Kellerei St. Michael-Eppan now numbers 320 members, with a total of 385 hectares under cultivation. Particularly the vineyards in and around the town of Eppan (Appiano) provide ideal conditions for growing grape varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Goldmuskateller and Pinot Noir. Smaller vineyards producing excellent structured red wines can also be found in lower areas and along the South Tyrol Wine Route. The mild and sunny climate is a key factor behind the outstanding quality of the wines produced here. Today, St. Michael-Eppan is one of the most prestigious wineries in South Tyrol, and indeed the whole of Italy, winning national and international prizes for its produce. The Italian wine guide “Vini d’Italia”, published by Gambero Rosso, chose it as its “Cooperative Winery of the year 2021“. St. Michael-Eppan had already won this accolade 20 years previously, with Hans Terzer being named as one of the world’s ten best winemakers around the same time.
