The fine edge of the chalky terroir

Ludwig Neumayer – who has been the viticultural lodestar of the Traisental wine-growing area – is one of Austria’s most highly decorated wine-makers.
Year after year, he produces stunning wines of memorable finesse in the poor, stony chalk terroir.
Stony chalk soils typically produce very light, crystal clear wines with lively, zesty acidity. Ludwig Neumayer’s wines stand out due to their unmistakable style – the fine balance of multifaceted dense minerality and crystalline finesse. That is Ludwig Neumayer’s personal signature. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the winery’s most important varietals. But its concentrated Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc wines also consistently get top ratings. The top wines of the collection carry the “Der Wein vom Stein” (wine from stone) label. They are grown in the highest and stoniest vineyards of Inzersdorfer Rieden, Rothenbart and Zwirch, at between 340 and 380 metres above sea level. In addition, excellent single-cultivar wines are produced under the “IKON” brand. The vineyards are managed consistently using regenerative and sustainable methods. They are allowed to become blooming gardens with a lively and colourful biodiversity. The aim is to achieve an optimal ecological balance in the specific conditions of the altitudes of the terroir. Ludwig Neumayer – the essence of the chalk terroir!
