Planeta is a “Trip to Sicily”, a journey started by the second generation of owners, led by Alessio Planeta, then in his 20s, under the guiding stewardship of the founder, Diego Planeta. This journey began in the first of the family’s estates, Ulmo, in Menfi, and with the most iconic of his label’s wines: Planeta's Chardonnay.
After the first winery had been established in 1994, the journey continued in the search for other inspiring viticultural areas on the island. The goal was to set up independent wineries and produce what would be considered the best wines in each area, working with indigenous vines while also experimenting with international varieties.
The next stage of the journey ended with the purchase of the Dorilli estate in Vittoria in 1997, in the area of the only Sicilian DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Noto followed in 1998, with the acquisition of Buonivini, and with the specific intention of realising the fabulous potential of Nero d’Avola within its region of origin.
Next came Etna, with the acquisition of the first 12 terraces at Sciaranuova on the northern slopes of the volcano in 2008. Gradually, more land was purchased, bringing the total area to 35 hectares, devoted to the cultivation of Carricante and Nerello Mascalese, with small experimental areas of Riesling and Pinot Noir.
This wonderful journey came to an end – for the moment at least – at Capo Milazzo and the tiny winery of Baronia. Since 2011, the focus here has been on the DOC Mamertino and various of the island’s older varieties, particularly Nocera.
Last but not least, since 2011 this “Trip to Sicily” has been placed on sustainable foundations: all the wineries and vineyards are being managed in line with the sustainability protocol SOStain®, representing a pledge to both the environment and the consumer.
