In 1994, Pablo Eguzkiza teamed up with Telmo Rodríguez and a further winemaker to create a Garnacha from old vines in the Navarra region. The wine was called Alma (meaning “soul”). These were the beginnings of a winery adventure originally called “Compañía de Vinos de La Granja“.
However, due to increasing grape prices and a lack of cooperation from the local cooperatives, the company was soon forced to leave the region and seek new projects.
It found a new home in Rueda. The first wines to hit the market were called “Basa”, followed by other brands such as Aran, Molino Real or Lanzaga. When it became increasingly clear that these brands needed to be brought together under a common designation, “Compañía de Vinos de La Granja” became “Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez”. With this name, the company was able to exploit Telmo Rodriguez’s renown in the world of wine, and his pioneering reputation in the Spanish wine sector.
From the very beginning, “Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez” placed great emphasis on using local grapes native to the region, in contrast to other Spanish vineyards where international varieties predominate.
In addition to its deep knowledge of wine, the Compañía is famous for its detailed studies on the best areas for cultivation and its ability to motivate the best winemakers in each region.
“Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez” now produces wines in the following regions: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Toro, Valdeorras, Cigales, Rueda, Cebreros, Alicante, and Malaga.
Its leading wines are: Lanzaga (Rioja), Matallana (Ribera del Duero), Gago (Toro), Gabo do Xil (Valdeorras), Basa (Rueda), Pegaso (Cebreros), Al Muvedre (Alicante), and Molino Real (Malaga).
