“Here on the Saar, it was always evident to me that there is only one way to achieve our goals – through the highest quality standards, precision and perfection. Over the years we have obtained the best slate sites, and now have the perfect workplace in which to pursue our vision, which motivates me and my team immensely.” Roman Niewodniczanski.
We are artisans employing traditional methods, and are convinced that this is the only way to create the fascination that is such an important element of our wines. We believe in wines for the ages – long-lasting, sustainable and bringing endless joy. And we believe in wines imbibed for pure enjoyment, made to be drunk with pleasure in the company of friends.
Grown in the scanty slate soils of the Saar, our wines are the result of meticulous manual processes and precise craftsmanship, as has been the case for generations.
Van Volxem wines are made exclusively from hand-picked grapes, which then undergo an arduous manual selection process. This work is fundamental to development of the characteristics that distinguish our Saar wines – clarity, elegance and pure enjoyment – and enables us to make wine with meticulous craftsmanship while avoiding fining agents.
“Full of excitement, profound, huge minerality, salty, dense texture, pure drinking pleasure!” Falstaff
In line with the long Van Volxem tradition, our wines are mostly dry – intended as a harmonious accompaniment to a meal, moderate in alcohol, ripe in acidity, dense and complex in structure. The uniqueness of our wines is shaped by the scanty, mineral-rich slate soils on our steep slopes, relics of marine sediments deposited millions of years ago.
The Van Volxem style is characterised by the pursuit of balance and harmony in its wines – exciting wines from a unique location and with great ageing potential – in the style of the renowned Saar wines from around 1900.
