As you approach the Weingut Mantlerhof in the centre of Brunn im Felde, a picturesque pond comes into view. At the western side of the pond is an imposing manor house with an early classical façade. Until the middle of the 16th century, what is now the Mantlerhof was a farming property owned by Admont Abbey. Two hundred years ago, the estate passed into the hands of the Mantler family. At first glance, solidity and consistency are aspects that immediately come to mind. And scrutiny of the label reinforces the same impression. But, as the first personal contact with the family will confirm, this estate is certainly not run by stubborn traditionalists. Margit and Sepp Mantler, together with their three children, not only cultivate vineyards, they are also active in arable farming. Since 2003, both branches of the farm have gradually been converted to organic cultivation methods, and are now officially certified.
On the impressive loess terraces, the glistening light-yellow walls visible far to the south, the Mantlers cultivate the classic white wines of the region: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in Kremstal DAC style and on a diverse range of sites. A particular speciality of the Mantlerhof, however, is the cultivation of the white wine grape known as Roter Veltliner. The estate produces some of the most impressive examples of this variety. To a lesser extent, but with the same passion, Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller and Neuburger are also cultivated.
The glacial loess with its high chalk content shapes the basic character of the wines, even the light ones: juicy, full-bodied, and long-lasting. The wines of the Mantlerhof are markedly distinct in their varietal characteristics, and have earned a reputation for long storage life. Although most of the wines are dry, there is a wide range of noble sweet wines with superb depth. The collection of old bottles from the winery starts with the 1947 vintage.
