Château de Fesles

Loire
Anjou, France

One of Anjou’s iconic properties, the Château de Fesles was built in the 11th century at the summit of the third-highest peak of the Loire valley, overlooking the Layon river. The winery dates back to the same period. Over the centuries, the Château de Fesles was owned by a series of aristocratic families, who gradually developed the vineyard. In the 19th century, the property was taken over by a family with a passion for wine, the Boivins. They made a number of significant contributions: increasing the area of vines under cultivation, improving the methods of winegrowing and winemaking, and also developing the commercial side of the estate. In 1991, Gaston Lenotre, the owner at the time, decided on a complete renovation of the property. The work of optimally exploited terroir has been continued by the Helfrich family, who have owned the estate since 2008. Now, a thousand years after it was first established, this estate is still at the forefront of innovation, thanks particularly to its conversion to organic farming practises.
