The princes of Mukhrani are among the oldest noble families in the world. The estates have been in the possession of the family of princes since 1512 and have, over the centuries, become the centre of political, economic and cultural development of the country. In 1875, one of the descendants of the princes, Ivane Mukhranbatoni, travelled to Bordeaux and the Champagne region to learn the art of making top-quality wines. Back in Georgia, he established Château Mukhrani and, thanks to the excellent terroir in the Caucasus and the craftmanship of his employees, he very quickly developed an excellent reputation in the international world of wine. Patrick Honnef, the incumbent chief oenologist of Château Mukhrani, learnt his trade in Bordeaux. He pays close attention to quality, from the vineyard to the bottle: 3,000 – 5,000 vines are grown per hectare and most wines mature in oak barrels for 15 – 18 months. Château Mukhrani combines traditional viticulture with modern technology. Both unique autochthonous and internationally known varietals are used to make well balanced wines full of elegance and intensity, which have regularly won awards since the 19th century. Saperavi, Shavkapito, Tavkveri, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals produce full-bodied, intense red wines with a velvety texture. The white wines made from Goruli Mtsvane, Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc are characterised by their elegant balance of fruit and acidity.
