Winemaker Ewald Zweytick from Southern Styria produces superb wines with a strong character – wines that leave a lasting impression on the taste buds. His guiding principle is to give each variety all the time it needs, and then to harvest only those grapes that are in the best of health and have reached full maturity. This philosophy is reflected in the longevity of his wines as well as in their strength and fullness on the palate. Ewald Zweytick now cultivates vineyards extending over some 20 hectares, planted predominantly with Sauvignon Blanc, Gelbe Muskateller and Pinot Blanc, but also including Chardonnay, Sämling, Pinot Gris, Grauburgunder, Rote Traminer and Zweigelt. Among the wines he produces, Zweytick’s personal favourites include “Don’t Cry” – also popular with top restaurants – and “Heaven’s Door”, vinified by means of intracellular fermentation. Both are made using Sauvignon Blanc, a variety he regards as the best in terms of bouquet, spiciness and length on the palate. These wines can be aged in barriques for up to 20 months or longer. They come extremely close to being what Zweytick regards as the optimum in terms of body, longevity and denseness of structure. Ewald Zweytick participates personally in all stages of the winemaking process – from harvesting and cellar work right through to shipping. His wines not only embody the unique climate and terroir of Southern Styria, they also incorporate a little of the soul of Ewald Zweytick himself.
