Founded in 1880, the Franz Haas winery has been passed down to the first-born child of each following generation, who has always been named Franz. Today, the estate vinifies grapes from vineyards covering some 60 hectares. Farmed using practices that are sustainable and close to nature, these vineyards are located in Montan and the surrounding municipalities of Neumarkt, Aldein and Truden, at altitudes ranging from 220 to 1,150 metres. Franz Haas has become prominent for high-elevation wine-growing far beyond the borders of South Tyrol. Due to accelerating climate change, the winery rented several additional hectares of land at higher altitudes as far back as the year 2000. More than twenty years on, this has proved to be a visionary decision that has yielded excellent results. At a height of 1,150 metres above sea level, the Aldein vineyard is one of the highest in the whole of South Tyrol.

A further interesting detail is the link between Franz Haas and the artist Riccardo Schweizer, who designed many of the labels and was associated with icons such as Picasso, Chagall, Cocteau, Paul Éluard and Le Corbusier.
