The Hirtzberger family has had an immense influence on wine-growing in Spitz.
One of the founders of Vinea Wachau, an association of winemakers in the Wachau, the family-owned estate focuses on sustainable farming and on ensuring that the region’s unique geological and climatic conditions are reflected in the bottled product. The family’s 20 hectares of vineyards are in some of Wachau’s best locations, including the iconic terraces in Singerriedel, Honivogl, Rotes Tor, Hochrain, Axpoint, Pluris and Steinborz. 40% of the total cultivated area is planted with Riesling, reflecting the passion for this grape variety. Grüner Veltliner takes second place, and the remaining area is planted with Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Muscat.
