Terras Gauda
Terras Gauda currently owns just over 400 acres of land in Rias Baixas, where all vines are hand-picked and planted between 160 – 500 feet in altitude. The winery is located in sub-region of ‘O Rosal,’ which consists predominantly of iron-rich ‘strip slate’ (metamorphic schist) and imparts fresh, mineral notes to the wines of Terras Gauda. The region’s unique terroir is rounded out with an exceptional microclimate characterized by mild temperatures, with an annual average of 15ºC, very few frosts, and abundant rainfall. This microclimate promotes excellent ripening, resulting in high sugar content and lower acidity compared to other areas further north in the Rías Baixas D.O., which experience greater fluctuations due to climatic factors.
Terras Gauda’s winemaker, Emilio Canas, is considered a pioneer in Research and Development within the Galicia region of Spain, and uses experimental micro-fermenters to create the first clonal selection of the Albariño grape varietal. When making his wines, Emilio implements 100% skin-contact maceration and ferments the Terras Gauda wine with patented native yeast strains from the winery’s own vineyards.
Terras Gauda has balanced its research advancements with its national and international expansion. Currently, it sells over 1.5 million bottles of wine annually in more than 50 domestic and international markets across five continents.
