This winery in Lahr was originally leased by Hans and Monika Wöhrle in 1979 and later taken over by Markus and Tanja Wöhrle, who have been running it since 2013. The drive towards organic methods of cultivation was initiated by Markus's parents in the 1980s. Based on the idea of viticulture without any harmful impact on flora and fauna, the vineyards were converted to cultivation without chemically synthetic pesticides, weedkillers and fertilizers. Operations have been eco-certified since 1991. Vineyards covering 18 hectares of land predominantly produce varieties of Burgundy, with red wine accounting for around 35%. Taking advantage of the vital soils carefully nurtured over the decades, Markus Wöhrle now focuses on propagating Burgundy clones using the traditional method of Massal Selection, sometimes adopting a dense planting scheme, to further develop the winery's style of wine and, in turn, fully exploit the potential of the vineyards. Respect and responsibility for the environment and nature is the guiding principle of the Wöhrle winery. The grapes ripen on vines rooted in healthy, productive vineyard soils, which greatly enhances the unique character of the wines. Following the precedent set by his parents in cultivation methods and his years of training at the Wendelin Brugger winery (organic pioneer in Baden), Markus Wöhrle's life as a vintner is based on the maxim of “viticulture and wine only in harmony with nature”.
