This DO was established in 1989 in the province of León, close to Galicia. Here, the microclimate created by the surrounding mountains allows the Mencía grapes to thrive and fosters the production of top-quality wines. Wine has been made in this region for several centuries now, normally under the auspices of feudal lords and monasteries. In recent times, however, the emergence of small wineries and improvements to the existing cooperatives have turned Bierzo into a reference area for wine production.
El Bierzo's vineyards are characterised by a fragmentation of plots, smaller farms and steep slopes, between 450 and 800 metres above sea-level and oriented towards all four points of the compass.
El Bierzo has a really special microclimate, eminently suited to growing vines in the region. The natural barrier of the Sierra de los Ancares weakens the power of the Atlantic storms and creates a continental climate with a beneficial maritime influence. The annual rainfall is 721 millimetres and the average temperature is 12.3 °C, with a recorded minimum temperature of 3.6 °C in the cold months and a maximum of 23.6 °C in the hottest months. The annual sunshine duration ranges between 2,100 and 2,200 hours per year.
Emilio Moro came to El Bierzo in 2016, with the Bodegas Emilio Moro in El Bierzo innovation project now encompassing over 60 hectares of vineyards. Up to now, the estate has presented three white wines: Polvorete, El Zarzal and La Revelía.
