Two sides of one valley
The wine-making villages of Terlan and Andrian lie between Meran and Bozen, at the heart of Italy’s most northerly wine-growing region. In Terlan, the vineyards nestle against the red porphyry rock of Tschöggl mountain.
In Andrian, the vineyards are ideally protected by the dolomite and limestone of the mighty Gantkofel.
2008 was the year in which a momentous decision was taken in Terlan: to form an alliance with South Tyrol’s oldest wine-growing cooperative, Cantina Andrian, on the other side of the valley and the Adige river. This decision bundled the strengths of the region’s two oldest grower cooperatives. Both wineries belong to the same DOC sub-region: “DOC Alto Adige Terlano classico”. This is why, since 2008, the grape reception and vinification for both wineries has been carried out in Terlano, but the processes are kept strictly separate to maintain the proud historical traditions. Marketed under their own name, the wines produced at Cantina Andrian are conscientiously and consistently developed with a style suitable to their terroir. This is the only way to ensure that they fully retain the characteristics of the Andrian slopes, and a limestone terroir unlike that at Terlan. Ensuring that both Adrian and Terlan retain their distinctive qualities has been a principle goal ever since the alliance was forged in 2008. Since then, a second distinctive Andrian-type wine has been added to the portfolio at Terlan, a radical alternative to the Terlan wines grown from volcanic soil.
